Originally known as the South Parish of Eastham, which was settled in 1644, Orleans became incorporated in 1797 after seeking independence since 1717. The Nauset Indians were the native people of the area. The relationship between the settlers and Native Americans was peaceful and cooperative.
The Gift House is a small salvage operation on the grounds of the Orleans Transfer Station. The purpose of the Gift House is to allow residents an orderly and clean place to leave good, sound items that could be reused by fellow residents and to save the town solid waste costs.
